7 MISTAKES YOU MAKE WHILE WASHING YOUR FACE

Neon Fix

Take a look at your skin, a really close look. Are your pores thoroughly cleaned out? Have you truly removed every speck of makeup? Probably not – because most people don’t wash their face correctly. Here are seven pitfalls to avoid when you wash with your favorite cleanser:

1.YOU HAVE DIRTY HANDS.

You’re cleaning your face but your hands are covered in bacteria? No-no number one is germ-laden hands – make sure you wash them thoroughly with soap before touching your face.

2. YOU’RE SCRUBBING TOO HARD.

We know you want your face clean but scrubbing vigorously is the wrong way to do it. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, scrubbing irritates the skin. To clean your face gently and naturally, just massage cleanser into your face with fingertips in a circular motion.

3. YOU DON’T RINSE WELL ENOUGH.

After you’ve thoroughly applied the cleanser, you want to make sure that you rinse fully and remove all traces from your skin. After all, without a good rinse, residue of cleanser and impurities will build up on the skin surface. Don’t neglect your neck, hairline, jawline and nose – these are the areas most often overlooked.

Although hot water feels good, heat dries out the skin and affects your skin’s natural, protective oils

4. YOU USE THE WRONG WATER TEMPERATURE.

Turn down the heat on your rinse. Although hot water feels good, heat dries out the skin and affects your skin’s natural, protective oils (Women’s Health). Stick to lukewarm water to cleanse your face effectively.

5. YOU RUB YOUR FACE DRY WITH A TOWEL.

Just as scrubbing irritates the face, rubbing with a towel is also harsh on the skin. Treat your complexion gently and use your towel to dab skin dry rather than using tugging or pulling motions.

6. YOU DON’T USE A TONIQUE OR TONER.

Why do you need to use a toner? A thorough swipe with a cotton-soaked toner is a great way to remove the last traces of grime and makeup from your face. Plus the toner returns your skin to its natural pH balance so it’s thoroughly prepared for the next steps in your skin care routine (Allure).

7. YOU DON’T MOISTURIZE RIGHT AWAY.

Your washing routine should always end with a hydrating dose from your moisturizer. Don’t wait – apply your moisturizer right away for easy blending with damp skin and also to seal the moisture in.

Why Not To Wear Make-Up Whilst Exercising

Neon Fix

We all know that wearing make-up whilst exercising is bad for our skin, so why do we still see gyms full of women wearing full faces of carefully-applied cosmetics? Mascara is one thing - though beware, you may find it running down your cheeks by the end of the session - but with foundation and powder you risk blocking pores and congesting skin that really needs to be able to sweat, sweat, sweat.

"When we get hot, several things happen to our skin. The first is sweating and the second is a slight relaxing and enlarging of the pores. Add a layer of even the best make-up on this and firstly you'll end up with streaky make-up, but you're also increasing the likelihood of a breakout," super-facialist Debbie Thomas tells us. "Your skin needs to breathe - during a good workout even more so. Mix in sweat, heat and open pores and over time the skin will become blocked. Not everyone will get spots, but most will get blackheads coupled with dulling and possible uneven skin texture."

Thomas recommends preparing for a workout by cleansing the skin, then either leaving it bare or applying a light serum suitable for your skin type which will penetrates quickly - a heavier product will just sweat off.

"I love the SkinCeuticals serums - Hydrating B5 hydrates dehydrated and tired skin and Phloretin CF is full of antioxidants. Because we create free radicals when we exercise, it is important to make sure there are enough antioxidants in the skin to counteract them," she explains.

A post-workout cleanse is just as important. With your pores enlarged, sweat and grime have even more opportunity to settle onto the skin and become trapped. "I would recommend a very light cleanse so as not to strip the skin, then you can apply your normal creams depending on time of day," Thomas says.

But what if forgoing make-up simply isn't a step you're prepared to take? The fear of bumping into someone you know whilst out on a jog is a very real one.

"If you must wear make-up during your workout try to use a light, oil-free, tinted moisturiser so that it's not as heavy. Then cleanse your skin as soon as possible - preferably before your skin cools down and your pores tighten again, trapping the make-up and grime in the opening of the pore which can lead to breakouts."

It's enough to deter even the most ardent of make-up lovers.

The Revenant
was the big success story of the 2016 Golden Globes, winning the awards for Best Motion Picture (Drama), Best Director for Alejandro Iñárritu and Best Actor for Leonardo DiCaprio – the strongest indicator yet that this could finally be the year he lands that long-awaited Oscar.

Thanks to the Golden Globes splitting the major film categories up into either drama and musical or comedy (unlike the Oscars, which doesn't), the cast and crew of The Martian also had cause for celebration after being named Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy), with Best Actor for Matt Damon.
